The Drilling Practices with Well Control and Problems course is a bespoke, operationally focused training programme developed and delivered by Well Academy.

Designed for experienced drilling and well control professionals, the course is built around rig-specific documentation and real operational data.

The programme combines expert-led instruction with scenario-based learning using a virtual simulator, with pre- and post-course assessment to measure knowledge and performance improvement.

Throughout the course, attendees will gain or further develop the ability to:

  • Identify and respond to drilling problems including losses, stuck pipe and well control events
  • Detect kicks early and execute appropriate well control responses
  • Operate choke systems and manage influx circulation effectively
  • Interpret pressure data and well behaviour under realistic drilling conditions
  • Apply best practice decision-making under pressure using simulator exercises

Who is this course for?

The programme is designed for experienced drilling and well control professionals, including:

  • Drilling supervisors
  • Drilling engineers
  • Senior rig crew
  • Personnel involved in well control-critical activities
  • Experienced personnel requiring targeted performance improvement based on operational history or identified development areas

A bespoke approach to training

Unlike standard well control courses, this programme is developed specifically for each client delivery. The course development process includes:

  • Review of rig-specific procedures and drilling programmes
  • Analysis of historical operational performance and recurring challenges
  • Prioritisation of training topics based on crew roles and responsibilities
  • Development of tailored simulator scenarios reflecting real operational conditions
  • Interactive delivery focused on decision-making, best practice and practical application

Course content

Course content is customised for each delivery and may include:

Drilling Practices & Operational Challenges

  • Drilling with losses and total losses
  • Formation integrity and ballooning
  • Stuck pipe, pack-off and drilling dysfunctions

Well Control & Response

  • Early kick detection and recognition
  • Response procedures and circulation techniques
  • Effective choke operations
  • Gas and water influx management
  • Maintaining well control integrity

Scenario-Based Simulation

  • Interpreting pressures and well behaviour
  • Simulator exercises based on realistic drilling scenarios
  • Facilitated debriefs focused on decision-making under pressure

Assessment

Delegates complete an initial competency assessment before the course begins, and a final assessment on completion to evaluate learning gains and improvement – giving operators a measurable record of performance development.

Course duration

Typically delivered over five days, with flexible scheduling available to accommodate sequential delivery to multiple crews.
