Course Aims

After completion of the RIW, attendees will be able to:

  • Conduct a basic visual rig inspection using a defined format and assess the condition of the major equipment on a drilling rig.

  • Identify major items that may impact safety and operational capability of drilling rigs.

  • Describe the criteria for the major items of rig equipment including the drawworks, top drive, mud pumps, BOP and well control equipment, electrical, main machinery and safety equipment.

  • Recognize indicators of overall condition and level of previous maintenance.

  • Identify standards used in the drilling industry (e.g. API) and their application to drilling equipment.

  • Explain the purpose and meaning of an equipment certificate and understand the content of the certificate.
